《Sensing Dark Matter》

Taishin Arts Award, 24th Edition, Third Quarter Nomination List _ Reasons for nomination

Zhou Lingzhi

"Dark matter" represents a cosmic concept that resists visualization. The central challenge of this work lies in how to apprehend through bodily sensation a substance whose existence is certain yet remains fundamentally intangible, a question that speaks distinctly to contemporary artistic practice. Following years of research in cosmic science and a succession of theater and VR dance works, Su Wenchi embarks upon another phase of somatic transformation. Employing imperceptible, latent energy as its formal foundation, the work opens new avenues of inquiry into two interconnected domains: the relationship between body and space, and the dialogue between perception and dance.

Since even rigorous scientific investigation remains unable to fully capture dark matter, leaving fundamental questions perpetually unresolved, so too must we acknowledge that the body itself remains profoundly mysterious and worthy of continuous exploration. Accordingly, the work transcends conventional dance aesthetics, shifting from the displacement of bodily sensation and the liberation of scale to a deeper comprehension of human "insignificance" within the cosmos. Through this reconceptualization, the work invites renewed philosophical reflection on our position within the vast universe. While technology can serve as an instrument of destruction, it equally possesses the capacity to facilitate critical reflection. Su Wenchi stands as a rare voice among Taiwanese artists in contemplating scientific philosophy, inviting audiences to encounter both the intellectual rigor and poetic resonance inherent in scientific inquiry. Simultaneously, the work reaffirms our connection to the affective dimensions of matter and the sensory imperatives that drive experience, thereby restoring an ethical relationship and profound communion with the cosmos.
