SU Wen-Chi

Born in 1977, she is a choreographer, new media artist and the founder of YiLab., lives and works in Taiwan. She received MA in New Media Art from the Taipei National University of the Arts and further study in Dept. of Drama, Theater and Performance of University of Roehampton London UK.

SU began her artistic career in 1998 as the dancer in Taipei Dance Circle and later in Kobalt Works (BELGIUM), enjoy performing and traveling around the world. In 2005, SU Wen-Chi founded YiLab., an experimental group of new media and performance artists working on integrating new technology with the performing arts, and seeking to present new performing formats. With the concept that in any given work, there is no single central media but instead a lot seemingly similar yet contradictory ideas. Each of the artists participating in the creation is an independent individual with the freedom to put forward various perspectives to explore the core of the proposition in the work. From 2016 on, she initiates the art research on Science & Art, through joint workshop, conference and performance, she aims to bridge the artists&scientist being together, explore the connotation and philosophical thinking of science and technology, and observing how this process inspires their performance making.

Over the years WenChi and YiLab. have presented LOOP ME (2009), ReMove Me (2010), W.A.V.E. (2011), Off the Map (2012), ReSet in Wave (2014), Unconditional Love and Fact (2017), Infinity Minus One (2018), and have been invited by Taiwan International Festival of Arts, Taipei Digital Arts Festival, New Horizon of Taiwan New Media Art Exhibition (Hong Kong), Asian Arts Theatre (Gwangju), Arcadi Hors Saison (Paris), SCOPITONE 2017 (Nantes), Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels), STUK (Leuven), LEAP Gallery (Berlin), Potsdamer Tanztage (Potsdam), InShadow (Lisbon), Kalamata Dance Festival (Kalamata), Mapping Festival, La Bâtie (Geneva), among others. They are awarded Outstanding New Media Award (2012) and Gold Award of the Alternative Design in the World Stage Design (2017).

As individual, SU collaborates actively with the local and international arts scene. She participated in the research of Watch & Talk Belluard Bollwerk International Festival (Fribourg), GVA Sessions: Choreography in the Quantum Space (Geneva), and RAM Dance-Tech Workshops with YCAM (Bristol). She choreographed for Indonesian Opera Gandari (Closing of Frankfurt Book Fair, 2015) and L'Après-midi de la Gravité (Quanta Tech Art & Performance Festival, Taipei, 2010). Recently, she gave lecture and workshop in Indonesian Dance Festival- Dance Workshop (Bogor, 2016), New Works Forum: Multimedia & Dance Dialogue (West Kowloon Cultural District, HK, 2016), Body & Matter: Science/Performance (Center of Art and Technology TNUA 2017), Taipei Contemporary Culture Lab. and Science&Society Summit (National Taiwan University 2018). She is awarded the Jury's Special Award by Taishin Arts Award (2009).
